I watched a German film called "Zwei Gesichter" which means "Two Faces" in English.
The film is basically about a closeted German football player who was dating a girl to make it seem as if he's heterosexual. But at night, he hooks up with a gay lover he met online and they've been dating ever since. But when the football player left his phone in the locker room, someone figured out he was gay and told the rest of the teammates. They felt like there shouldn't be any queer people on the team and the football player tried to leave but his coach believed that if the football player believed in his own talent, he should stay on the football team. When listening to the film throughout, it was a struggle as I couldn't decipher all the words as Germans speak fast and I needed to go back and replay the video to listen to it. I also had to use the subtitles to help me understand some of the German words that I never heard of. After watching the film, I felt like I could watch more German films with English subtitles and eventually I'll be able to understand slowly without the subtitles. Most of the challenge was understanding the German words I didn't understand. The film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BevYAyOzgV0 So in total, I spent around an hour, watching and trying to understand the film.

When Christmas season came up, I decided to go to Chriskindlmarket to see what's happening and what's new. After I arrived, all I smelled was beer and sweet pastries mixed in with the salty scent of pretzels. Just seeing how Germans celebrate Christmas with the little trinkets is adorable as they have intricate details.
Looking at the titles and booths had their locations and where they came from which was interesting as they came all over Germany and there were some countries outside of Germany. When I was walking around the market, I bought gingerbread cookies as the smell was overly sweet where you can smell it from a mile away. I also bought a pizza pretzel which was interesting as the whole pretzel tasted like pizza crust. Passing by the other customers who were looking around and I caught glimpses of their conversations, mainly the common phrases such as: "Entschuldigung!" : Excuse me "Ich bin bereit zu essen!" : I am ready to eat! "Ein frohes Fest!" : Happy holidays! Basically, small phrases that just bring happiness from just hearing it and spreading the joy of Christmas around the market. After I went to the market, I decided to learn about the history about Christkind who was a fairy who was a grand angel where she is known as something similar to Santa. She gives gifts on the night of Christmas Eve. Knowing about German culture is interesting because they create stories like Krampus and Christkind. So overall, I learned about German culture and how they celebrate Christmas. I stayed there for about 2 hours as there were crowds of people surrounding the market but I got to explore the markets thoroughly and smell the delicious food. In German class, when we were learning about how to ask questions for transportation and how to describe places in general. So, we were given an assignment where we had to create a brochure where we got to pick a city to be a tour guide for people coming from Germany. There were different sections we had to describe which is facts, transportation, places to visit, restaurants, and places to stay. Having these various sections to write about, I got to practice my reading, writing and learning about cultural views from Germany to Japan. When reading about Tokyo, it was interesting, reading about the culture of Japan and having to relate it back to German people as they have different interests that pertains to themselves. So I had to pick interesting places that I would think they would like to visit. After writing this brochure, I thought about what I can improve on. On the brochure, I could've provided more information in German such as explaining more into the restaurants and the transportation. But it was challenging as I didn't know what would interests people from Germany. For this project, I spent around ten hours on it, researching, translating, sketching the layout, creating the brochure itself, and editing it. My German teacher wanted us to create a brochure for the sport teams in Lincoln Park High School and Adidas is sponsoring the team. So in order to create the brochure, I needed to know the sport teams that are there in my school and my teacher wanted me to conduct an interview with people in the sports team so I get to know them and how they feel about the Adidas sponsorship. After interviewing them, I had to translate the questions and answers to German as Adidas is a German company and in order to communicate with them directly, it'll be easier to translate them in German. I had to promote LPHS as a professional high school sports school that should get the sponsorship from Adidas themselves. After creating the brochures, we have to present our brochures in German and try to be persuasive as if the classroom is the Adidas sponsors. For this project, I spent around three hours on it, interviewing, sketching the layout, and creating the brochure itself.
10 phrases: 1) Einen Tisch for eins, bitte. , 9) Lecker! , 10) Guten Appetit.
When I first went to Berghoff's restaurant I was nervous as my German wasn't the best especially when I didn't practice my German throughout the school year to communicate to fluent Germans. As I went in I had to contemplate what to say to the waiter such as "Hallo!" or "Guten Morgen". But as I went in I said "Hallo" because I wasn't as comfortable to speak in German at first but I said "Ich möchte bitte schon etwas zu trinken bestellen" which means I would like a drink please. I ordered an ice tea but I said that in English since I don't what "ice tea" is in German. As I was ready to order, I called the waiter and I ordered by saying "Ich would like to order die Kartfoffeln und Schnitzel". My German was broken so I had to use a combination of English and German which was embaressing but the waiter knew what I was saying so I was relieved. When my order came I said "Danke!" As I observed the restaurant and I noticed it did have German aspects similar to Laschet's Inn such as the bar and them serving pretzels. I enjoyed the classic German food and thanked the waiter by saying "Danke" and said bye by saying "Auf Wiedersehen" https://drive.google.com/a/cps.edu/file/d/0B_H7vZHWKLfTTU1wcnNmUnhxMGc/view?usp=sharing http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/donald-trump-plant-polizeistaat-a-1133948.html Trumps Traum vom Polizeistaat Speaking about politics in another language is difficult as the complexity of German grammar is needed to be thought about while thinking about another complex thing such as politics. I only knew the basics in the article such as das, wichtig, and weisse but when they were describing political aspects about Trump, it was difficult to understand. But I have improved on trying to pronounce my German and as I learned and read the article, I defined the words that I didn't know such as "insgesamt " : a total of " Seiten": pages "zentralisierte": centralized "Maßnahmen ": activities "veröffentlichte": published So having that cleared up, I understood the article better which is good as I get to understand how Germany views America and how they view the politics of Trump. Feedback I would give to myself is that I could have given more input into the situation but I only had limited vocabulary as I hadn't taken German for a few months. 1) My supervisor mentioned that she understood why I put myself in Phase 2 because I haven't been practicing German but I still remembered some sentence structures and past and present perfect words. She agreed on placing me in Phase 2.
2) I did share the goals I had for language development. She provided guidance by asking me how I wanted to portray my art in German and what kind of art style am I going to use. She did wanted me to post my art to her so I can describe my art in German and explain it to curators. 3) The resources she provided me was Quizlet, Duolingo, and other resources. These sources will help me actively help my memory to learn and reteach me German vihjihow much time did you spend- I spent around 2 hours reviewing basic German words and phrases such as saying "Hallo!", "Auf Wiedersehen!", "Wie geht's?", "Farbe" und "Lieblingsfach".
